Instagram can be wonderful when we’re searching for fashion inspiration. Social influencers are big business for fashion. We can feel happier when we see images of people whose lifestyle inspires us to see ourselves in a similar context, but what are the psychological implications of our engagement with fashion on social media? How long does the pleasure aspect last?
‘We get pleasure from the chasing, not so much the buying. When we’re looking at Instagram, we’re getting a lot of pleasure from looking at these things and thinking ‘I want to have it’. And once we’ve bought it, the dopamine levels drop – we’re not satiated for very long.’
